This wonderful Mechanicsville backyard is the perfect illustration of how a tight space offers a wonderful opportunity for creativity. Despite the backyard's limiting layout and close proximity to neighbors, our design team worked with the homeowner to create a two-room space that is both comfortable and private. To embrace the natural, woodland setting bordering the property, the goal was to create a textured space full of lush foliage and a mixed material hardscape. The landing and patio areas are composed of BLU 60 slabs with a two-course Villagio border (both products from Techo-Bloc). For added contrast, the patios are connected with irregular bluestone and the landscape includes a stacked stone planter. To create privacy along the property line, 3 custom wood screens were constructed; scented jasmine vines are growing on the screens' trellises for increased ambiance. Additionally, to improve flow with the existing deck, we redesigned and built the stairs with an open concept to make it easier to move throughout the space. This added stair space also provides more room for the homeowner's vegetable container garden.
